A video editing studio is a great thing to have at home, provided you have some free space (even if you can arrange for it in your computer room), a passion for video and film-making, or some other incentives. But you have to take a decision before thinking of setting up a studio at home. Video editing would require some investment of time and hard-work before you can get into groove but first of all you need to have some clear idea of why you need to set up a studio. You might be the official photographer and videographer of your family. Or you might consider setting up a studio, gain some expertise, and later get a license and earn monetary benefits out of it. If you are into making wedding and celebration videos, then you badly need a studio to get your videos organized. And if you are making documentaries or have someone at home who is into it already, a video editing studio becomes a must-have.

Basic requirements for your workstation

Now let’s have a look at the basic things needed to set up a simple video editing studio at home. You will need some capital initially to arrange for the devices needed. A set of computer or two, video-editing software and speakers would do for a start. Try to make sure most of your systems and software are up to date though. As part of furniture in the video editing room, you first of all need to have at least one big solid table that can bear the weight of heavy computer devices. You should have at least two monitors, so that you can select the options on one, and work on the editing part on other, or do similar multi-tasking. You can start with a laptop, provided size is not a concern for you. To manage all your videos, and considering the size of each video, you need to have a large hard drive, and two will do no harm. The Processor should be fast enough so that it does not get stuck while handling of heavy data, so have a dual core processor. Having speakers would be a good idea to manage sound levels and coordinate the sound and video. Video capturing hardware should ideally include camcorders, ideally ones with memory cards, or more advanced devices, such as professional video cameras.

Software: The control key to all your ideas

The most important thing after having all the hardware has been organized is the software. The kinds of software used may differ depending on the operating system or device being used, whether you are working on Windows, Macbook or Linux. Windows Live Movie Maker is one of the most common video editing software used for Windows. Virtual Dub comes with features like video splitting, batch-processing (to be used when there are many files) and compression. Other software for Windows include Wax, which makes video editing flexible, and Moving, which has many shortcuts, and supports video formats like MPG, FLV and WMV. Good software for Mac include iMovie, which comes for free with every new Mac and includes features like movie trailer and one step effect along with audio editing; Avidemux, which can be used on Windows as well, and makes tasks simpler. Blender is another software that can be used for Mac devices as well as others, and offers features such as modeling, animating and 3D movie making and editing besides many others and is considered by many as the best video editing software to date. Software for Linux includes Cinelerra, Kdenlive, Kino and LiVES, all of which offer a variety of different features like linear and non-linear video editing.

Maintenance: The key to long-term success

Besides knowing your devices, it is important to take good care of them. Keep them away from any dust, and clean the home-made video studio regularly. Delete all extra files and extra copies of your videos you might have stored as inventory, otherwise your computers might get overloaded. Add special effects, and make good use of zoom whenever necessary. And try to learn with every film you shoot and edit, because without the learning process taking place side by side, video editing can become a really boring job. All the good and successful movie makers who have been in the market for long have had boasted of the quality of trying new things in every project and you should do the same to make video editing more enjoyable.
